History of the Saturn settlements
Real missions first, then the settlers' own years, ending on the day the Long Passage arrives.
The Saturn settlements were built by the grandchildren of the people who built Concordia. Concordia's zero-g yard launched the nuclear-thermal Meridian class that opened the outer system, and Concordia's families supplied many of the first crews. Read that story at Concordia 2045, and the habitat lineage that led to it at five generations of space habitats.
Timeline
| Year | What happened | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| 2004 to 2017 | Cassini orbits Saturn. The Huygens probe lands on Titan in 2005. Cassini's radar maps Kraken Mare and finds the plumes of Enceladus. | physics |
| 2028 and 2034 | Dragonfly, a nuclear-powered rotorcraft, launches for Titan in 2028 and arrives in 2034. | physics |
| 2041 to 2045 | Concordia is built at L5. Its zero-g yard builds the Meridian class. | fiction |
| 2052 | A robotic orbiter flies the Enceladus plumes repeatedly. Claims about biosignatures are held to tighter limits afterward. | fiction |
| 2058 | Robotic surveyors map the north shore of Kraken Mare and the ice beneath it. | fiction |
| 2061 | The first autonomous industrial landing at Kraken Shore: two small modular reactors and an ice-mining plant. | fiction |
| 2066 | The propellant plant makes methane and oxygen. The first robotic ascent vehicle reaches orbit. | fiction |
| 2071 | The Gateway's fixed truss is assembled from Meridian-class deliveries. | fiction |
| 2074 | First crewed landing at Kraken Shore: 12 people. | fiction |
| 2076 | The Gateway's rotating habitation ring opens. | fiction |
| 2078 | The first permanent Titan crew of 40 arrives, and the first insulated residential wing opens. | fiction |
| 2082 | The Garden Hall opens: the town's public room, and the first place on Titan with trees. | fiction |
| 2084 | Saturn's ring-plane crossing. The Sun passes through the plane of the rings and they go dark. From the Gateway's 15-degree orbit they stay open by up to 15 degrees. | physics |
| 2088 | The Enceladus research station opens under an agreed planetary-protection protocol. | fiction |
| 2091 | The Long Passage, the first fusion colony transport, makes her maiden crossing. | fiction |
| 2096 | A second residential wing opens. Kraken Shore passes 250 residents. | fiction |
| December 2097 | The second ring-plane crossing. | physics |
| July 2100 | Northern spring on Titan. The Long Passage arrives on her fourth crossing with a new set of habitat modules. | fiction physics |
The settlements in July 2100
| Place | People | Work |
|---|---|---|
| Kraken Shore, Titan | About 320 residents | Methane and organic-chemical processing, ice mining and electrolysis, propellant for the fleet, servicing, science support |
| Saturn Gateway | About 60 crew and visitors | Transfer hub, cargo, maintenance, crew rest, communications relay |
| Enceladus station | About 18 researchers and staff | Plume analysis and astrobiology under planetary-protection rules, with no extraction from the ocean |
| Long Passage | 40 crew, up to 200 settlers and visitors per crossing | The fusion transport between the inner system and Saturn, about a year each way |
The Saturn economy is small. It imports high-value electronics, specialised machinery and some consumables. It exports propellant to the ships that serve it and sells helium-3 in experimental quantities. It does not export water to Earth.
See the places on the maps, and the ship's engines on the propulsion page.
